DENR summit features UPLB’s waste management practices

UPLB’s waste management practices were featured in the Solid Waste Management Summit 2022 held at The Manila Hotel on July 14-15.

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources’ Environmental Management Bureau (DENR-EMB) – National Capital Region organized the event in celebration of Philippine Environment Month.

With the theme “Strengthening Waste Management for a Healthier Environment,” the summit aimed to raise public awareness about proper waste management and environmental protection by promoting practical steps and best practices.

Roberto P. Cereno, vice chancellor for community affairs, was invited to share UPLB’s best practices and experiences in waste management. In his presentation, he focused on UPLB’s completed projects on collecting and disposing hazardous chemical wastes and dismantling and disposal of materials with asbestos components.

He also discussed UPLB’s organization and mobilization of the UPLB Corps of Environmental Stewards, and the “WASS UP, LB!” webinar series on waste-at-source segregation.

Dr. Rico C. Ancog, dean of the School of Environmental Science and Management (SESAM), shared about SESAM’s academic programs, research and extension, and public service initiatives concerning environmental conservation, protection, and restoration.

Joining Vice Chancellor Cereno and Dean Ancog were Christian Paulo C. Altoveros, pollution control officer at the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Community Affairs; and Sofia A. Alaira, researcher, and Jeran J. Bunzo, administrative staff, from SESAM.

Also present during the summit were William P. Cuñado, director of the Environmental Management Bureau; Atty. Ernesto D. Adobo Jr., officer-in-charge of the Department of Environmental and Natural Resources; and Sen. Cynthia A. Villar, who served as the keynote speaker. (Roi Mojado)
