The Municipality of Los Banos awarded the University of the Philippines Los Banos (UPLB) with a plaque of recognition for academic excellence during the Los Banos Quadricentennial Celebration held at the Old Municipal Covered Court on 17 September 2015.
The award acknowledged UPLB’s significant contribution to the development of Los Banos and its support to the programs of the local government. The international repute of UPLB has drawn national and international institutions to base their operations near the University, hence earning for the town the designation as a Special Science and Nature City.
Receiving the award on behalf of UPLB was Dr. Serlie Barroga-Jamias, Vice Chancellor for Community Affairs (OVCCA), from Los Banos Mayor Caesar Perez and guest of honor Mark Lapid, the Chief Operating Officer of TIEZA. The OVCCA coordinated UPLB’s participation to the Banamos celebration this year.
Another awardee was the UPLB Credit and Development Cooperative (CDC) for providing quality services and for showing the strong impact on the role of cooperatives for attaining equity, social justice, and sustainable economic development.
Meanwhile, UPLB showed its support to the Municipality of Los Banos by sending around 160 participants from its various units to the foot parade held on the same day.
On top of that, UPLB showcased a float for the first time, carrying a model of the UP Oblation set amidst floral arrangements, and a fountain powered by solar panels. The float was later displayed at the Carabao Park for the UPLB community to enjoy.
The float design was conceptualized and rendered by the Edible Landscaping team under UPLB Chancellor Fernando Sanchez, Jr. Designer Ryan Rodrigo P. Tayobong of the College of Agriculture’s Crop Science Cluster shared that the theme “UP@LB: Partners in Building a Science and Nature City” symbolizes the preservation of nature by UPLB through green technology in the Internet age. Construction was done by the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Planning and Development (OVCPD).
UPLB also provided the LED screen and manpower for the one-week festivity through the OVCCA-Business Affairs Office headed by Prof. Genaro A. Cuaresma, Assistant to the Vice Chancellor for Community Affairs.
During the grand revelry, Ms. Mackie Cao, finalist of The Voice Philippines and a BS Agricultural Economics graduate in UPLB, rendered a powerful song highlighting the celebration’s theme “Pagkilala sa Kasaysayan, Pagpupugay sa Kasalukuyan, Pagtanaw sa Kinabukasan.”
