The UPLB Housing Office-Office of the Vice Chancellor for Community Affairs (UHO-OVCCA) has purchased and provided mattresses – for free – to 2,334 student residents in the ten dormitories of the University. They were also provided with free chairs.
According to Dr. Cesar B. Quicoy, Chief of UHO, the new mattresses and chairs are “meant to give our students comfort while they are inside the campus.”
Some UPLB dormers were happy about the free mattresses.
Mark, a resident at the New Dormitory Residence Hall said: “Buti po at may libreng foam na dahil natutulog lang ako dati sa banig.” (It’s good to have free foam mattress because I used to sleep in a mat.)
Angel, a resident at the Women’s Residence Hall pointed out: “May ilan ho akong alam na nakatira dito na walang pambili ng mattress dati, kaya natutulog lang sila mismo sa frame nung higaan nila.” (I know some dormers who could not afford to buy new mattresses, so they just slept in the bed frames).
As for the pre-used but still serviceable mattresses, Vice Chancellor for Community Affairs Dr. Serlie Barroga-Jamias, is coordinating their donation to offices in UPLB that need these as well as with LGUs. A total of 50 pieces had been donated to the UPLB Land Grant Management Office (LGMO) of OVCPD. Meanwhile, 250 pre-used mattresses had been pledged for donation to the Municipality of Los Banos. Other LGUs that need the mattresses for their evacuation centers are also welcome to contact the OVCCA.
