The Occupational Health and Safety Standards Committee of the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Community Affairs (OHSSC-OVCCA) trained safety officers of the colleges and units of UPLB on occupational health and safety at the ICOPED Auditorium on 3-7 July 2017.
The training, entitled Basic Occupational Safety and Health (BOSH), is prescribed by DOLE in accordance with Rule 1030 of the Occupational Safety and Health Standards. It aims to equip agencies to develop effective safety and prevention programs, including the development of health and safety standards in their respective workplaces.
The OHSSC tapped a team of experts from PEME Consultancy, Inc., a safety training firm accredited by the Bureau of Working Conditions of DOLE to give trainings on environment, health, and safety.

The experts were Engr. Joel Ello, chief executive officer, and his colleagues, namely: Engr. Onesimo Panaligan, Mr. Dominador Caneda, and Mr. Filipino Ilagan.
PEME provided a manual on various topics, such as occupational safety and health standards, programs, and hazards, safety inspection, fire safety and emergency preparedness, job hazard analysis, safety in materials handling, environmental monitoring, among others, which the experts discussed in detail during the training.

BOSH is part of the plans and programs put forward by Prof. Garry Jay S. Montemayor, chair of the OHSSC, for UPLB to comply with the Labor Code of the Philippines. It was coordinated by UPLB’s pollution control officer, Engr. Joseph A. Pagtananan.
The OHSSC is a university-level committee under the OVCCA that ensures a safe working environment for faculty, staff, students, and other stakeholders. Each college and unit in UPLB also has its local OHSSC.
Other services rendered by the OHSSC are coordinating disaster risk and reduction drills and trainings with the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), conducting building safety inspections, and analyzing water quality in the campus (Karla Mae Bolaños & Jo-Jee Ocampo).
